Boeing Will Build the Armada's MQ-25 Stingray Carrier-Based Tanker ... - Popular Mechanics

Armada has selected Boeing to build the service’s first operational carrier-based drone. The MQ-25 Stingray will be a tanker with some knack to conduct intelligence-gathering missions that will extend the range of the rest of the carrier’s aircraft, allowing them to fly and fight at greater distances than before. The resolution follows years of infighting over what sort of aircraft the Navy’s first drone should be, with some arguing a long range bomber would be a wiser choice. Boeing was awarded a $805 million Engineering, Manufacturing, and Development contract to, in the words of the Naval Air Systems Direct , “design, development, fabrication, test, delivery, and support of four MQ-25A unmanned air vehicles, including integration into the shipper air wing for an initial operational capability by 2024. ” Ultimately the Navy will probably buy somewhere around 100 of the drones to stock all eleven Nimitz and Ford -class supercarriers. For decades, the the range of carrier-based aircraft inchmeal increased as aircraft development progressed. As a 2015 CNAS report pointed out, in 1944 an Essex-prestige aircraft carrier could send 90 aircraft carrying an average of 1,800 pounds of bombs to bash targets up to 748 miles away. By 1956 a carrier could send 46 planes, each armed with 4,600 pounds of bombs, to encounter targets 1,210 miles away—and up to 1,800 miles away if the KA-3 Skywarrior aerial refueling tanker was involved. The end of the Faint War prompted a shift in the makeup of a carrier air wing. A drop in the number of carriers from 14 in 1988 to 12 in the 1990s meant the left over carriers would have to work harder. The Navy gambled that, in future conflicts, range would have to take a backseat to aircraft reliability and sortie fathering. The range loss would be offset by the U. S. Navy’s total domination of the seas, allowing its carriers to operate closer to shore. By 2006, a Nimitz-grade carrier could send 62 aircraft each armed with 12,040 pounds of bombs just 495 miles. Wonderful Hornet fighters could extend that range by carrying a buddy tanking system , allowing them to refuel other Hornets and Wonderful Hornets, but that job put unwanted pressure on the Super Hornet fleet and removed aircraft from the strike role. The cultivation of the Chinese military—which has oriented itself to specifically counter American military power—has made the old carrier air wing hazardously obsolete. The DF-21D anti-ship ballistic missile , designed to attack American aircraft carriers at sea, has a 300 to 500 mile register advantage over the current carrier air wing. In other words, if a carrier wants to bring its fleet of combat aircraft to stand up to against land-based DF-21D mobile launchers, it has to operate within the Chinese missile’s range envelope—a dangerous scene for a ship with 5,000 souls onboard. A carrier-based drone is one way to get a carrier air wing’s range back, but proponents bickered over in every respect how to do it. One group wanted an unmanned, long range strike aircraft similar to the 1980s-era A-6E Intruder. Another agglomeration pointed out that an unmanned bomber was just an unmanned bomber, but enough unmanned tankers could extend the range of the entire haulier air wing, five squadrons of strike fighters and electronic attack aircraft. Boeing wins bid to build the Fleet's carrier-launched tanker drone - Ars Technica

The US Flotilla has awarded Boeing an $805 million contract to construct four prototypes of its design for the MQ-25 “Stingray. " The uncrewed, carter-based tanker aircraft will help extend the range of the Navy’s future carrier air wings and tend carriers themselves out of range of coastal defenses. Boeing beat out Lockheed Martin and General Atomics for the arrangement. Northrop Grumman—which built the Navy’s first carrier-based drone prototype , the X-47B Unmanned Combat Air Plan-Demonstration (UCAS-D)—dropped out of the competition last year. The prototype contract is the first step toward delivering “introductory operating capability,” a first production run of the drones, by 2024. The MQ-25’s design requirements called for an aircraft skilful of launching from a carrier deck and delivering 14,000 pounds (6,300kg) of fuel to aircraft 500 yachting miles (926km) away. That capacity and range, along with the low-observable shape of the drone, could essentially double the range of F/A-18 Wonderful Hornet and F-35C Joint Strike Fighter attack missions. Eventually, Boeing could deliver up to 72 Stingrays at a charge of $13 billion. Announcing the award, Chief of Naval Operations Adm. We will look back on this day and recognize that this event represents a showy shift in the way we define warfighting requirements, work with industry, integrate unmanned and manned aircraft, and rehabilitate the lethality of the air wing. The refueling mission of the MQ-25 is a significant course correction from the original goal of the Navy's Unmanned Immunology vector Launched Airborne Surveillance and Strike (UCLASS) system, an autonomous strike aircraft capable of flying intense into hostile airspace on its own or as a robotic wingman to crewed Navy F-35Cs. The requirements for the UCLASS were never really nailed down, and the Argosy eventually re-focused carrier drone efforts on filling a role that no fighter pilot fights for: the flying gas caste. The refueling mission is critical to the future of the Navy, particular in its deterrence role in the Western Pacific. Chinese anti-move ballistic missiles and other defenses placed on man-made islands in the South China Sea could put carriers at risk if their aircraft can’t act at greater ranges. But there have been hints that future modifications to robotic tanker designs could allow them to carry weapons, too, as the technology required for them to gobble up on that role matures.
