Here's How Drones Do (and Don't) Jeopardize Passenger Aircraft - Scientific American
One awkward evening this fall a pair of U. S. Army UH-60M Blackhawk helicopters cruised low over New York City’s Staten Islet, providing security for the United Nations General Assembly’s annual meeting in nearby Manhattan. Just after sunset a shoe box–expanse airborne object collided with one of the choppers, damaging its main rotor blade, window frame and transmission set. Inspection at a nearby airfield revealed evidence of something that had never happened before—a civilian drone had plowed into a crewed craftiness in U. S. airspace. That sent the Army, the National Transportation Safety Board and other government agencies scrambling to inquire into how and why this had happened. Those questions, although important, are less interesting to aviation researchers than determining just how much damage increasingly public drones—like the 1. 4-kilogram quadcopter in the Staten Island incident—can potentially inflict on helicopters and mini, low-flying aircraft. Data on the risk that lightweight drones pose to aviation safety is scarce, even as consumer and commercial drone sales dupe off. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) projects that almost seven million drones could be sold in the U. S. by 2020. Pilots already image of the potential for drone collisions very seriously, sometimes putting potentially lifesaving missions on clutch for fear of such a strike. In August firefighters battling a large blaze on Montana’s Rice Ridge little while shut down helicopter operations when an unauthorized drone was spotted in the sky nearby. The following month government agencies issued abbreviated warnings for civilians to keep their drones far away from low-flying aircraft being used to locate and evacuate Hurricane Harvey victims in Houston. It remains unclear, however, whether the gamble of a drone collision is big enough to outweigh the need for those aircraft to carry out their missions. Low-flying helicopters—such as those conducting search-and-liberate operations—likely face the most serious risk of collision because they often occupy the same airspace as multirotor consumer and commercial drones, says Ian Horsfall , professor of armor systems at Cranfield University and the Defense Academy of the Amalgamated Kingdom. “Not only is there a threat of poorly controlled drones being in the wrong place, but also the nature of helicopter flight is such that [even] a nicely licensed and piloted drone might be hit by a helicopter that strays into its airspace,” or vice versa, Horsfall says. The Army Blackhawk over Staten Cay had been flying at an altitude of about 150 meters when it was hit. Hobbyist drones are barred from most parts of New York Big apple but are permitted in some locations —including Staten Island’s LaTourette Park —as long as they stay below about 120 meters. Unchangeable-wing aircraft may not spend as much time in quadcopter-accessible airspace as helicopters, but they could sustain severe damage from a smash. Barely a month after the Staten Island incident, a drone smashed into a twin-engine propeller glide near Quebec City. The Beechcraft King Air A100 aircraft was approaching a runway at Jean Lesage Global Airport when its left wing collided with the drone at just above 450 meters. Source: www.scientificamerican.com
Repeat Anafi review: The best Parrot drone yet - Expert Reviews
The Ape Anafi represents a bit of a watershed moment for the French drone firm. Although it’s been making drones for a long while, the Anafi is its surely first folding quadcopter. More important, perhaps, is that this is the first time it can say it has a product to rival the best DJI has to offer. Extensive though its previous offerings have been, they haven’t quite managed to combine the ease of flight, full range of features and camera characteristic of DJI’s range. READ NEXT: DJI Mavic Air review - the best drone money can buy. Parrot Anafi review: What you destitution to know That all changes with the Parrot Anafi, which goes toe to toe with DJI’s own folding drones, the Mavic Air and Mavic Pro. Just like those drones, the Anafi’s arms hug away so it can be stowed snugly in a case and slung in a small bag or backpack, and just like those drones, it shoots 4K video and top-prominence stills. The Anafi comes with a remote control but it can also be flown solely from the screen of a connected smartphone. And although there are no motion-based selfie controls like you get with DJI's portably quadcopters it does come with a number of automated camera and tracking modes to support you get the best possible shot. Parrot Anafi review: Price and competition At a price of £630, the Imitate Anafi has the Mavic Air firmly in its sights. That’s a very competitive price for a drone of its type and it significantly undercuts the Air’s originate price of £769. Currently, the Air can be had for £699 on Amazon, but that’s still £70 more expensive than the Anafi. In terms of alternatives, the diddy DJI Ignite and the DJI Mavic Pro also hove into view. The former doesn’t fold away like the Anafi, nor can it capture 4K video, but it's miniature, easily baggable once stowed in its case and flies beautifully. Moreover, you can buy a Spark for £450, although at that assay you don't get a dedicated remote control included. Going up the scale, we have the Mavic Pro, which is more expensive than the Anafi (£756), but is quicker and has a more extensive feature set. Parrot Anafit review: Design and features The Parrot Anafi sits between the DJI Mavic Air and the Pro in terms of its measurements. It could have been smaller if Parrot had engineered the front rotor arms to fold backwards and its rear arms to fold forwards. a substitute alternatively, they fold in the opposite direction and the whole thing ends up being long and thin instead of short and squat. For mention, it’s about half the size of a French baguette, which is strangely appropriate given the Anafi’s continental origins. Still, once snugly tailor-made in the included case it’s pretty easy to stow in a bag and its low weight of 320g means you’ll hardly know it's there. The flip side is that the Anafi feels unequivocally flimsy compared to the beefier Mavic Air, but build quality is decent and because it's lighter, it's less likely to do mar or cause injury if you manage to crash it into something or someone. Located beneath the battery, this employs one of those feeble hinging metal latches to lock it in place, which I'd imagine would be easy to break or damage if you forget to tight-fisted it, then pop the battery back in on top of it. The Anafi also has a few features that the DJI drones do not have. First up, both the remote control and battery. Source: www.expertreviews.co.uk
