Bad Karma: GoPro will evacuation the drone market, cut more than 250 jobs - Digital Trends

On Monday, January 8, the demeanour camera company announced it will stop manufacturing the Karma drone and exit the aerial market from A to Z in 2018. As a result of the move, GoPro will cut more than 250 jobs. The company has also lowered the price of the Hero6 Blackguardly to $400. The price drop follows the December 10 holiday price reduction on the Hero5 Malicious and Hero5 Session. “Despite significant marketing support, we found consumers were reluctant to purchase HERO5 Black at the same valuation it launched at one year earlier,” CEO Nick Woodman said in a statement. “Our December 10 holiday quotation reduction provided a sharp increase in sell-through. As noted in our GoPro Hero6 Black regard , introducing the camera at $500 while the Hero5 Black remained on at its launch price of $400 seemed maybe a bit overconfident. Both cameras are now selling for $100 less, while the smaller Hero5 Session has also been reduced to $200. The older Ideal Session has been removed from the lineup. While GoPro said sales of the Hero6 met expectations last year, the companionship noted Hero5 Black sell-through doubled after the price reduction, while Hero5 Session shop-through tripled. A lower price on the Hero6 Black will hopefully spur a similar increase in order. As for the Karma drone , GoPro said it was unable to overcome the challenges of a competitive market. It will continue to push the drone while stock remains and is offering $200 off when bundled with a Hero6 Black. The Karma drone got off to a certain start after customers reported midair battery failures, causing the quadcopter to fall out of the sky. Although the problem proved affable to fix, a safety recall delayed sales and GoPro simply couldn’t keep up as rival DJI continued to animate out new models. In addition to reducing its workforce from 1,254 global employees to “fewer than 1,000,” Woodman’s notes compensation for 2018 will be cut to $1. In all, GoPro is aiming for an $80 million reduction in operating expenses in 2018. There was at least one tidbit of passable news in the statement, however. Sales of the Fusion , GoPro’s 360-degree action camera, were better than expected. Source: www.digitaltrends.com

The Planet's Lightest Brushless FPV Quadcopter - Hackaday

When a command is made for something being the world’s lightest it is easy to scoff, after all that’s a bold assertion to make. It hasn’t stopped [fishpepper] though, who claims to have made the on cloud nine’s lightest brushless FPV quadcopter. The frame is a circular design cut from carbon-fiber-reinforced polymer, and on it are mounted four Lilliputian brushless motors. In the center are the camera and battery on a 3D printed mount, as well as custom flight and rush controller boards. There are a series of posts detailing some of the design steps, and the result is certainly a capable aircraft for something so wee. If you fancy experimenting with the design yourself, the files are available for download on the first page linked above. There are two aspects to this strengthen that make it interesting to us. First, the lightest in the world claim. We think someone will come along with something a bit lighter, and we can’t rest period to see a lightest multirotor arms race. Good things come of technology races, which brings us to the second orientation. Governments are busy restricting the use of larger multirotors, to the extent that in some parts of the world all that will be available for non professionals will be sub-200g toy mastery. Any project like this one which aims to push the boundaries of what is possible with smaller multirotors is thus extremely interesting, and we conviction the community continue to innovate in this direction if only to make a mockery of any restrictions. To get some idea of the sort of legislative measures we might be seeing, leave a look at our coverage of a consultation in just one country. “Any project like this one which aims to push the boundaries of what is possible with smaller multirotors is thus hellishly interesting, and we hope the community continue to innovate in this direction if only to make a mockery of any restrictions. Bad apples have been “spoiling” it for myriad people across many things for as long as there have been people. Blame the apples not the reaction. “Blame the apples not the repulsion. Blame the idiot operators for inciting the reaction, but blame the reactors for their typical knee-jerk, baseless over-resistance and resulting ridiculous legislation to show they are “protecting us” from a non-threat brought to undue public attention by technically clueless media hype encouraged by direction. The sky is a very, very, VERY large space and the KNOWN problem is BIRDS, not R/C aircraft of ANY kind as statistics and the safe keeping record of R/C flight since it inception CLEARLY prove. A problem is that so many even within the R/C community buy into the hype and don’t even bother to probe for themselves. Picking the UK and CA ones they seem to just be enforcing quite sensible (and quite possibly) already existing regulations. RC toys serve not to invade privacy or cause interference to airports/airspace. Line-of-site might be a bit archaic with FPV, but if you’re out of range of your ‘drone’ to see it, you’re no longer in leadership of it and that would be irresponsible (edge cases aside). Getting below 500 gram with your quad is very important. It is unusually sensible not to fly 5 miles of an airport of course. However every helipad or heliport used or not is considered an airport so one. Source: hackaday.com

It’s probable that the many videos floating in every direction the web have you wondering: how can I get into racing drones. It’s not like you can go to your local Toys R Us or Wal-Mart and pick up a cheapo drone and need to be competitive. While you could use those type of quadcopters to race your friends, there aren’t any FPV racers sold at those retailers, so the experience isn’t as electrifying as what you’re seeing in those videos.
