- Cody Hemenway, liberal, and Ryan Bone, both automation engineering technology majors at Chippewa Valley Technical College, describe flight of the quadcopter they built as their final project at the CVTC Manufacturing Show last month. While the new drone certification program at CVTC will not discipline students to build their own drones, it will cover fundamentals, theory, operations and laws concerning drones. When Jake Zwiefelhofer of Air Advisors displayed a drone to a number gathered for an agriscience field day at Chippewa Valley Technical College two years ago, the uses of the device in agriculture were melodic clear. Using GPS technology, a drone could fly to specific spots in a field to check on crop conditions. What wasn’t as certain was whether an agribusiness or an singular farmer would have the skills to operate a drone or know the laws governing their use. To address that need, CVTC is offering a nine-assign drone certification. The series of three eight-week online classes leading to what is officially called an unmanned aerial systems certificate begins this summer. The certificate is designed to give students a tough foundation in understanding unmanned aerial vehicle systems technologies, capabilities, regulations, safety and licit responsibilities. “We try to keep up with emerging technologies,” said Lynette Livingston, CVTC dean of business and erudite initiatives. Livingston said the proposal came as a result of conversations with business leaders and CVTC knack in areas in which drone technology is being used, such as agriculture and law enforcement. Construction companies, real estate agencies, group districts, media outlets and marketing agencies might also use the technology, Livingston said. The three classes embody UAS Fundamentals and Theory, UAS Operations, and Commercial UAS Policy Development. Livingston noted that simulators are an effective means of training in operations of drones because realistic drones are controlled by smart phone applications or control devices. Most understandable consumer drones are affordable quadcopters robust enough to fly outdoors and snap photos or video. The startup Zero Zero Robotics is coming out of surreptitiousness mode to announce its first product, Hover Camera , a small drone specifically designed with no exposed propellers to safely sprout footage indoors. Hover does exactly what it sounds like: Turn it on and it hovers in midair wherever you do a disappearing act it. Hover is more a flying camera than a joyriding drone, and the controls on its paired smartphone app are for delicately repositioning it, not zooming... "We had a few scheme goals in mind: Create a personal flying camera that’s portable and very safe, but also super easy as can be to use for everyone," says the CEO and founder of Zero Zero Robotics, Meng Qiu Wang. "Most of the drones on the vend fall short in these three aspects. To do that, Wang and his team built Hover with specific limits that created from A to Z new aerodynamic and computer engineering obstacles. First, the team wanted to future-proof Hover against any drone regulations, so it had to be under the FAA’s 250-gram verge, over which drones require a permit. The final model is 238 grams—just over half a pound—which required a lot of competent design and miniaturization to save weight. Second, Hover needed to be indoor-safe, so they wrapped its four propellers in a carbon fiber ensnare cage that's light yet strong enough to endure serious stress. Since the carbon fiber interrupted lots of airflow, the collaborate calculated entirely new aerodynamics models, programmed algorithms to speed up the custom rotors to compensate, and made exclusively DC motors to handle the higher speed. Finally, the team had to embed all that AI and computer programming onto a tiny 3-by-5-centimeter intrude no bigger than a stick of gum. At the end of that design labyrinth stands the Hover, a durable and lightweight flying camera that required so numberless design innovations that the team has filed 16 patents to date, says Wang. Hover’s rectangular carbon fiber box looks like a VHS tape until its twin rotor flaps unfold 90 degrees away from the camera bristle like a book opened to its middle and laid flat. The 13MP main camera can capture 4K video. Using unique-finger swipes in the controlling app, users can bank the camera down 90 degrees, up 30 degrees, or communistic and right on a custom gimbal. This design innovation is way to ditch GPS—the community method drones use to stay stable—by relying instead on the downward camera’s precise mapping of the dregs. The aircraft are so useful for photography (and inexpensive compared to the alternatives), even practised videographers are jumping on the qcopter bandwagon and referring to them as flying cameras rather than qcopters or drones.
