Look at: The Syma S107 R/C Helicopter Is The Coolest Thing You Can Buy For Under $20 - TechCrunch

If you’re one of the heroic souls who dares follow me on the Twitters , you probably know exactly where this post is going. I haven’t been skilful to shut up about this thing for over a day. As someone who writes about shiny electronic things for a living and just generally spends far too much things rummaging around the Internet, I’ve come to be wonderfully adept at spotting up-and-coming trends. When three unrelated individuals from all walks of being all started talking about this little $20 RC helicopter (the Syma S107) within a few days of each other, I figured it was something worth looking into. It arrived yesterday. Any interval it’s left my hands since, it because it had either run out of juice or had been commandeered by someone else. It is, without a doubt, the coolest little gadget I’ve nabbed for under $20 in a in fact, really long time, and I fully intend to convince AOL we need a fleet of these for the office. Insanely Restful To Fly. Charges over USB, making it a killer office toy. Replacement parts are equally dirt cheap. You’ll only get about 7 minutes of flight per require, but that’s not really a surmountable issue. Flying: Now, this isn’t my first trip to the ol’ air show. While I’m not about to be crushed to death by the weight of my helicopter assemblage or anything, I’ve picked up a flyer or five in my days. From Air Hogs, to the pricier $200-$300 Walkera choppers, to one indefinite little junker that we quite literally bought up out of the back of some dude’s van, I’ve flown (and totally wrecked) more of these things than someone who doesn’t over... If only in terms of learning curve, the S107 is king. Of the five people who have blasted this thing all about my office since it arrived yesterday, not a one took more than a minute or two to figure out the basics. Yeah, you’ll probably get your directions reversed and send this reaction spinning toward your face at LEAST five times on day one. But, like a good video game, the formidableness comes from things inherent to the act itself (that is, flying a friggin’ tiny helicopter around your house ) rather than things introduced by bad design. When we first opened it, our goal was to fly from a table to an ottoman without careening into a wall or clipping a ceiling fan. By the end of the day, we were launching from the desk and wharf on an iPad case (that we convinced ourselves looked just like a landing pad) across the room. For a group that was mostly made up of ne’er-flyers, that’s one heck of a acute learning curve. Hell, I took the above super-classy photo while I was flying (Note the camera lens hiding in the crevice of my elbow. The controller has three primary parts: two control sticks and a central knob. The leftmost control bulge accelerates the propeller, sending you up or down. The right control stick allows you to lean forward or back, or tender left or right. The center knob can be twisted left or right to cancel out any subtle but constant turning tendencies — if your Chopper always seems to be. Source: techcrunch.com

Drones for the Holidays - Slate Arsenal

Just before the holidays in 2010, I reviewed a collection of flying toys —planes, helicopters, and UFO-like drones that could take to the air indoors and out. That year turned out to be a turning spotlight for radio-controlled flyers. Before then, RC planes were a trudge to assemble and very difficult to fly. Flying toys are now ubiquitous, and each year they’ve gotten better. A twosome of weeks ago I called up Peter Li, who owns the flying store ThinkRC , to ask about the latest trend. These birds have four rotors and a gyroscope that keeps them sure in the air. They’re slightly more expensive than traditional choppers, but because they’re bigger, they’re more airworthy outdoors. (Most tiny RC flyers can’t contract with wind. Air Hogs Heli Replay, $69. 95 on Amazon. The Heli Replay is a standard tiny RC chopper with one deed up its sleeve—in addition to an RC controller, you can also fly it with your phone. The helicopter comes with a small infrared transmitter that you plug into the audio jack of your iOS or Android machinery. Once you install the Air Hog app, you can pilot the bird by tilting your phone. Li, of ThinkRC, told me that not a lot has changed in the last one years. The S107—which ThinkRC sells for $24. 95 —remains his best-selling entry-level RC flyer. Its undying popularity has made it even better: If you fly your bird enough you’re bound to crash it fatally, but now there’s an endless supply of spare parts that will consent to your S107 to last forever. First, it flies pretty well outdoors—it keeps relatively constant even in a slight breeze that would down standard RC choppers. Because it has four radio channels, it doesn’t just fly up and down and further and back—it also goes sideways. (Most tiny RC helicopters can only fly forward. Some, including the S107, can do reverse, too, but only the few with four channels can also go edge on —and they’re often difficult to control. Two years ago, I decreed that the Parrot Drone far and away my favorite flying toy. “This thing is feeble-minded,” I wrote of its spectacular specs—two on-board cameras, a bevy of flight sensors, stabilizing gyroscopes, and even an auto-control computer. Now Parrot has updated the Drone with better components. The new drone has a high-definition, front-fa camera (spy on your neighbor with better fidelity. ), an altitude sensor that allows the bird to fly more than 100 feet elated (the old version topped out at 20 feet), and a new flight-control system that allows for even more intuitive control. You be in control of the Parrot Drone with your phone or tablet—it works with iOS and Android devices. Flying is like playing a video profession: While holding down an on-screen button, you tilt your phone in the direction you want the device to fly. All those sensors and processors watch over the drone extremely stable, so unlike every other remote-controlled flying toy, the drone goes exactly where you privation it to. When you let go of the controls, it keeps its position fixed in the air. Source: www.slate.com
