Now Periscope lets you livestream from a drone - TechRadar
The new clash waging between Facebook and Twitter is over video, and Facebook Live has seen significant updates in the last month that amp up its broadcast adroitness, including opening the door to streams from drones . Not to be outdone, Twitter's... Plus a few other upgrades, including search and redemptory beyond 24 hours. Drones, of course, are the coolest of the three, so let's start there. In the coming weeks, Periscope will let anyone with a supported DJI drone and an iPhone spout a bird's eye view to the watching world. Periscope will pull the drone feed automatically once you hook up your iPhone to your drone's remote, and users can tell and sketch over the broadcast if they like. Supported drones are the DJI Inspire, Phantom 4, Phantom 3 Professional or Advanced. If you own one of these, streaming offers an reservation new way to enjoy your drone. Twitter is beating Facebook to the punch when it comes to drone streams, so it's worth watching how many people start broadcasting their fly-overs before they tackle entertain off on the larger social network. Search and save Periscope is also introducing broadcast search, allowing users to genus in titles or topics they're interested in and find related streams. A tap on the search button in the Global List will slam withdraw up suggested streams to dip into, including #Travel, #Music and #Food. If you want to join the conversation around a exceptional subject, just select the Broadcast button in the search results or use the appropriate hashtag in your video title. Two rare topics - First Scope and GoPros and Drones - are currently in the testing lab. The first lets broadcasters invited new streamers to Periscope, while the latter will include videos made with the titular products. Periscope finished up today's talk onslaught by announcing it will, by default, save broadcasts on the platform and Twitter in perpetuum. Users can still delete a relay if they choose to, and if saving a stream beyond 24 hours is just not something they're into, they can go into their settings to have the day-long limit scraps. New app could dismal difference between life and death in disaster struck regions - Plymouth Herald
Phones could be fastened to drones or kites in order to help aid humanitarian rescue work in disaster-struck regions, thanks to scientists from Exeter University,. The academics have created an app for Android phone devices which uses geographic details to map landscapes. It means that for the first time, a standard smart phone can be converted into a self-contained remote sensing mechanism which will gather data and allows the smartphone to operate autonomously, so that once airborne it can capture images according... The scrutiny was led by Dr Karen Anderson, a remote sensing scientist who leads the University of Exeter's Environment and Sustainability Institute's DroneLab. She said: "There are now more mobile devices than humans on Planet. This global distribution of devices offers a great opportunity for democratic mapping but until now, there have been no apps that exploit the encyclopaedic sensor sets in modern devices in this way. "Currently the sensors on mobile phones harvest data about their users and send this intelligence to third-parties. "We wanted to start using those data for beneficial purposes such as community-led mapping. Alongside recent developments with lightweight drones and a growing custom appetite for open-source, free to use mapping data, we are excited to see the variety of mapping applications for which our new app will be acclimated to. The app was created with collaborators from the Cornwall-based non-profit research organisation FoAM Kernow and uses on-directorship sensors in modern smartphones including the accelerometer, GPS, compass and camera, to generate ready-to-use spatial figures... The app is different from many other apps because it can be live-coded which means that it is not fixed in its functionality. This allows the user to slate it to behave as desired and images can be captured according to strict criteria for example, when the phone arrives at a particular discovery, or when the camera is level and pointing in a particular direction. Dave Griffiths, director at FoAM Kernow, who programmed the app, said: "As unbosom/open source software, the app is accessible to anyone in the world with an android device, and means people can combine new sensor technology for their own uses with... "We found that the finery results were obtained when the phone was attached to a stable single line kite or to a gliding drone so as to limit the vibrations, but there will obviously be a wide range of ways of capturing high quality data using... The group has also generated a austere coding framework that allows the stream of data from the phone sensors to be used to convert photographs into Geo-TIFFs – these are then timely for use directly in Geographical Information Systems (GIS) for... New mobile phone app for grassroots mapping - Sphere Daily
The android mobile phone bearing means for the first time a standard smart phone can be converted into a self-contained remote sensing device. The app, created by a dispose of University of Exeter scientists and collaborators from the Cornwall-based non-profit research organisation FoAM Kernow, uses on-live sensors already within modern smartphones including the accelerometer, GPS,... The app gathers the data and allows the smartphone to function autonomously, so that once airborne it can capture images according to the user's specification. The study was led by Dr Karen Anderson, a remote sensing scientist who leads the University of Exeter's Mise en scene and Sustainability Institute's DroneLab. Dr Anderson said: "There are now more mobile devices than humans on Earth. This global distribution of devices offers a enormous opportunity for democratic mapping but until now, there have been no apps that exploit the comprehensive sensor sets in modern devices in this way. "Currently the sensors on mobile phones fruit data about their users and send this information to third-parties. We wanted to start using this data for beneficial purposes such as community-led mapping. Alongside late-model developments with lightweight drones and a growing public appetite for open-source, free to use mapping details, we are excited to see the variety of mapping applications for which our new app will be used. The app is different from many other apps because it can be 'live-coded' which means that it is not persistent in its functionality. Dave Griffiths, Director at FoAM Kernow, who programmed the app, said: "As free/open beginning software, the app is accessible to anyone in the world with an android device, and means people can combine new sensor technology for their own uses with... "We found that the conquer results were obtained when the phone was attached to a stable single line kite or to a gliding drone so as to limit the vibrations, but there will unmistakably be a wide range of ways of capturing high quality data using... The team have published an article in the catalogue PLOS ONE , A grassroots remote sensing toolkit using live coding, smartphones, kites and lightweight drones, which documents the many ways in which the app was tested and shows results from a...
