Airbus drone detection set-up could help protect planes - WalesOnline

Airbus has developed a 'table-UAV System' that could help protect airports and even nuclear facilities from intrusions by drones. An incident at Heathrow this weekend highlighted the potential risk of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) when a British Airways Airbus plane is believed to have been struck by a drone. The plane from Geneva, with 132 passengers and five crew on board, was hit as it approached the London airport at 12. 50pm on Sunday. If confirmed, it's rumination it would be the first such incident in the UK. Counter the risk Airbus Group, which has a wing manufacturing plant at Broughton, are at the scathing edge of developing technology to counter this risk. Airbus Defence and Space has developed a Counter-UAV Modus operandi which detects illicit intrusions of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) over critical areas at long ranges and offers electronic countermeasures minimizing the endanger of collateral damage. READ MORE: Now Airbus' files patent for a bigger seat for obese passengers. “All over the exultant, incidents with universally available small drones have revealed a security gap with regards to critical installations such as military barracks, airports or atomic plants”, Thomas Müller, head of the Electronics business line... “As a specialist in defence electronics, we have all the technologies in our portfolio and the integration cognition which are needed to set up a quick-response protection system with extremely low false alarm rates. Airbus said the scheme offers very high effectiveness by combining sensor data from different sources with latest figures fusion, signal analysis and jamming technologies. It uses operational radars, infrared cameras and operating finders from Airbus Defence and Space’s portfolio to identify the drone and assess its threat potential at ranges between 5 and 10 Kilometers. Tracks the helmsman Based on an extensive threat library and realtime analysis of control signals a jammer then interrupts the element between drone and pilot and/or its navigation. Furthermore, the direction finder tracks the position of the pilot who subsequently can be arrested. Due to the Streetwise Responsive Jamming Technology developed by Airbus Defence and Space, the jamming signals are blocking only the proper frequencies used to operate the drone while other frequencies in the vicinity remain operational. READ MORE: Could this be the Airbus worker of the to be to come. Since the jamming technology contains versatile receiving and transmitting capabilities, more sophisticated measures like unconnected control classification and GPS spoofing can be utilized as well. This allows effective and specific jamming and also a controlled takeover of the UAV. The Marker-UAV System has been tested extensively at Airbus Defence and Space’s own premises and during customer presentations in Germany and France. Depending on the required configuration, an operational methodology could be available from mid-2016. Source: www.walesonline.co.uk

Drone warfare: the expenditure of progress - Open Democracy

and the profession undertaken for it by Open Briefing in 2014. More recent work by the Remote Control Project informs an article by James Bamford in the paper Foreign Policy. This estimates that 86 countries now have drones. While the great majority are for surveillance and reconnaissance, and uncountable have useful civil functions, Bamford also reckons that as many as 19 countries have armed drones (see " Terrorists have drones now. Thanks Obama ", Unrelated Policy , 28 April 2016). This casts an ironic light on comments from within the US airforce in 2012 expressing uncertainty about the subsequent of its surplus Predators and Reapers as the war in Afghanistan wound down. It should not have worried: enter ISIS and expanding wars in Iraq, Syria and Libya, and drudgery for all its drones – and much more – was assured. In fact the current problem for the USAF is that a rapid expansion in the drone-force is now happening, but without enough pilots to fly them. Multitudinous are seeking to leave the service or at least redeploy away from the drone-force. A recent report in Aviation Week quotes a USAF horse's mouth saying that around 250 pilots are leaving annually, while the current training programmes are only producing 150 recruits (see Caitlin Lee, “ Pilots Needed ”, Aviation Week , 25 April – 8 May... This is an element illuminated with subtle power in another Aviation Week piece by David Hambling, author of the hugely instructive book, Swarm Troopers (see " Loitering Munition Availability Expanding Internationally ", Aviation Week , 14 April... The prime is a small armed-drone called the Warmate produced by a Polish company, WB Electronics. the company recently announced that it is working with a dominant Asian state as a potential customer. Hambling says : “Warmate has electro-optical and infrared (IR) sensors and two warhead options, one for use against belabour armoured vehicles, the other a fragmentation device. ” This may all be entirely legitimate, given the absence of any arms-control agreements for armed-drones. Not only that, most of the components of systems such as Warmate – including propulsion, sensors and even warheads – are likely to be readily to hand on. Source: www.opendemocracy.net

DoD: Loyal Operations Command Hand-launched Drones Failed Tests - Military.com

Deliberate Operations Command bought dozens of hand-launched drones that failed military tests and may not be skilful to meet mission requirements in the harsh environments they were designed for, according to a newly released report from the Defense... The waterproof drones act intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance missions and are capable of landing on land and in fresh or salt water. , was awarded an initial one-year, $6 million obligation to build an indefinite quantity of the Puma AE for Special Operations Command in 2008, with an option for four more one-year contracts with a acme value of $200 million. But initial testing revealed the drone didn't meet Special Operations Instruction's stated needs for launch and recovery, or requirements for its weight and size, the DoD report said. Special Operations Oversight oversees each military branch's special operations forces, including the Navy's Virginia Beach-based SEALs. The possess's "testing results questions whether the current capabilities of the AECV system are sufficient to fulfill its assignment and whether the current capabilities represent a significant increase in performance to justify the acquisition of... The Puma AE had laboriousness landing within 25 meters of a designated point in winds of 17 mph, the DoD report says. In one instance, the drone landed 81 meters -- virtually the length of a football field -- from its designated spot. To meet Special Operations Command's requirements, the drone was presumed to be able to repeatedly land within 25 meters of a spot in winds of up to 23 mph, yet testing never reached those speeds. all except the winds," one unknown evaluator said in the report. "The gust of winds cause the aircraft to turn and climb uncommanded numerous times during the testing withdraw. It says Special Operations Command acquired 41 of the drones because it didn't follow its own procedures for revalidating programs "that did not gather primary performance attributes. According to the test plan, "if the system doesn't meet all primary performance attributes, the process is not considered operationally effective or suitable. Special Operations Command officials who certify the drone's effectiveness were hypothetical to notify acquisition officials of the drone's shortcomings. But for reasons the report doesn't detail, testing results erroneously showed the program met minutest standards and no notification was made. If notification had been made, the program could have been re-evaluated or had its production increments modified. As an alternative, Special Operations Command officials said in September 2014 they planned to spend $35. 4 million buying additional drones throughout the 2019 fiscal year. The report notes the test plan allowed evaluators to override rules for determining its sensation by providing "adequate justification" as to why a specific shortfall wasn't operationally significant, but no justification was provided. Another evaluator identified other shortfalls in the drone, saying its infrared camera "has unspeakable resolution" and is unable to positively identify targets. The drone also failed to meet standards. Source: www.military.com
