Ape AR Drone 2.0 Power Edition review - TrustedReviews
What is the Ape AR Drone 2. 0 Power Edition. The Parrot AR Drone 2. 0 Power Edition is an incremental improvement on the stock alternate-gen model. It introduces a menacing new all-black colour scheme and tripples the quadrocopter’s battery life, jumping from 12 minutes of getaway time to 36 minutes. Controlled via smartphone or tablet, the high-end flying machine features an integrated HD camera and is compatible with both iOS and Android. With a £320 prize tag, the Parrot AR Drone 2. 0 Power Edition is far from cheap. Can these seemingly small improvements live up to this lofty pricing. Ape AR Drone 2. 0 Power Edition - Design The Parrot AR Drone 2. 0 Power Edition has been given something of a ninja themed makeover. Gone are the vibrant colours of recent models, replaced with a stealthy black finish. It comes with both a streamlined outdoor hull and a bulbous, watchful indoor shell with extra foam and plastic padding. Unlike past models, the Power Version comes boxed with a range of additional rotor blades in a variety of colours. These black, orange, down in the mouth and red accessories not only allow for a level of customisation, but let you bring a bit of vibrancy to the black being. Although it is possible to change the blades on a whim, doing so is outrage-inducingly fiddly. It’s a good job it comes with plenty of spares as the small clips used to hold the blades in whereabouts ping off never to be seen again. The Parrot AR Drone 2. 0 Power Edition weighs just 380g and there's no escaping the fact that this big kid’s toy in effect does look the part. Parrot AR Drone 2. 0 Power Edition - Features Battery life is the big feature rehabilitation on the Parrot AR Drone 2. 0 over past models. This improved staying power isn’t achieved by any particular wizardry though. it fully comes boxed with two 1,500mAh Lithium-Ion power packs as opposed to one 1,000mAh one. Although the adding staying power is gratefully received, the want to stop and change power supply halfway through a session is hardly ideal. What’s more, the added battery has been built into the Power Copy’s increased price, so it's far from a great deal. Having run down the juice, recharge times are quiet long-winded too, with a couple of hours needed for each battery to return to full power. The stability of the Parrot AR Drone 2. 0 Power Version is second to none on the mass market front. Left to hover, the Drone will hold its position with seeming opulence, keeping a constant, stable space between itself and the ground. The four rotors are individually powered, with the drone’s clever electronics working to withhold things as level as possible. Controlled via an app, there are a selection of touchscreen based command options available. With joy pad type controls the standard, you can also choose to use your smartphone’s accelerometer to move the drone forward and back, or side to side. An emergency jetty button is included on all control setups, and is needed more than we would have hoped. Source: www.trustedreviews.com
Mimic AR.Drone 2.0 Quadricopter: A Drone Anyone Can Fly - LiveScience.com
Hobbyists launched the era of deprecating drones decades ago with radio-controlled model airplanes. More recently, drones have become synonymous with covert military operations and underhanded law-enforcement activity. But now the era of drones has come home, and the flying machines are better than ever. There are several interesting drones within reach to consumers now. Among the most popular and capable drone for outdoor use is the Parrot AR. Drone 2. 0 quadricopter, an incredibly strong and capable flying machine that takes HD video and which you control with your Android or iOS smartphone. I was excited to unbox the AR. Drone 2. 0 Elite Number ( $300 ) I'd bought as a gift for my 12-year-old son (and, honestly, for myself), because I’d read that it was easy to fly. I've never had good destiny with remote-control flying machines (most were broken or shelved by the end of Day 1). I wasn't disappointed. Drone has some limitations and frustrating aspects, but this quadricopter is an positive blast to fly, and even an old guy like me, who’s not a gamer and is totally inept with joysticks, found it simple to operate. Setting up the AR. Drone's physical parts takes just a twinkling of an eye or two. Even if your first flight is outside. Unfortunately before you can fly the thing you'll have to charge the battery, which takes between 2 and 2. 5 hours. While the battery is charging, I suggest watching the tutorial videos. They will communicate to you all the basics you need for your first flight. If I'd watched the videos, I wouldn't have crashed the thing into the sliding door before we till the cows come home got it out of the house, and the three flights it took us to figure out the controls would have been reduced to one. You'll also need to download the app to your iPhone, iPad, iPod or Android plot. The user manual calls the app AR. FreeFlight 2, but in the Apple App Store it's just called FreeFlight. The app's Piloting peculiarity — which is the main thing you'll use — isn't accessible until you've paired it with the drone's onboard Wi-Fi, after the battery is charged and just before you make your first bolt. [ Photos from Above: 8 Cool Camera-Carrying Drones ]. The battery slips very likely into the drone, and the hull snaps on (rather loosely, actually, but it works just fine). Wi-Fi pairing can take a couple tries, especially if your smartphone is paired with your residency Wi-Fi. you might want to go into your smartphone settings and look for the drone's Wi-Fi. I strongly recommend that your first flight be outside, in an open parade-ground, on a windless day. Easy to fly, if you read the directions. Because my son and I failed to read the directions or watch the training video, our first few flights were frustrating. The drone took off just pulverized, hovered on its own, but we couldn't maneuver it. After watching the video, the fun began. One useful tip: In preferences, put the app in Joystick mode. That allows you to act the controls by sliding your thumbs up/down and left/right. If you're not in Joystick mode, you control the drone by actually tilting your phone, and. Reiterate AR.Drone 2.0 Review: Fly Higher, Farther, and More Intuitively - Popular Science
After enthusiastically covering the inauguration of Parrot at the Consumer Electronics Show back in 2010, PopSci went on to honor the camera-equipped, remotely-piloted quadrotor with a Finest of What's New distinction . And so with that in mind I unboxed... Second-generation products, as often as not, tend to correct flaws in the sooner generation and marginally refresh or update certain features (now with HD camera. I approached Parrot's newest drone accordingly. That's not to say the AR. Drone 2. 0 is a quite re-imagined concept--the aerial vehicle itself is essentially the same--but the latest version has taken several significant technological strides back, packing a stronger suite of sensor... Outwardly the AR. Drone 2. 0 is still the same quadcopter, bearing a few minor aesthetic changes. A new force sensor helps keep the AR. Drone 2. 0 vertically stable at altitudes as high as 164 feet (the cardinal-gen drone's ultrasound sensors maintained stability only up to about 20 feet). A 3-axis magnetometer joins the 3-axis gyro and 3-axis accelerometer that were already there, making it significantly easier to guide (more on that later). 0 also received its first built-in, automated maneuvering function--double-tap the screen of your dominance device (like its predecessor, the AR. Drone 2. 0 is controlled via a smartphone or tablet app) and the aircraft executes a midair anger. And, yes, the drone's front camera can now shoot in 720p HD at 30 frames per second, which it beams right to the screen of whatever smartphone or plate you are using to pilot, giving you a drone's-eye view. But it now also records that footage, dumping video and still images to an on-board USB drive or to the pilot's command device. Privacy advocates might have something to say about that, but as a feature it lends the Parrot AR. Drone 2. 0 an added aspect of utility beyond stark recreation. Enhanced Control: As noted above, Parrot's drones are controlled via a smartphone or tablet app (we hand-me-down both an iPad and an iPhone for this review, with similar good results for each) through an interface that is in one sense remarkably intuitive... The drone mimics the squabble of your device, so to fly it forward you tilt your smartphone forward, and to fly right or left or backward or some combination of those, you tilt your smartphone accordingly. That's the intuitive purposes. But when you rotate the drone (which is done via a touchscreen joypad within the app) to the point where you and the drone are no longer facing the same direction--let's say the drone is facing 90 degrees to your lawful--all intuition dissolves... Now, if you tilt your phone forward the drone travels to your right. If you tilt your phone to the fair, the drone comes back toward you. Parrot remedied the need for the pilot to be constantly compensating for the direction the drone is facing via a 3-axis magnetometer that tells the drone in all respects how it is oriented respective to the.
